The show Black Mirror has had some really good/uncomfortable episodes around this very topic. It's definitely a highly philosophical question that goes beyond just the idea of control.

I almost didn’t continue watching Black Mirror after the first episode- which made me want to wash my eyes with bleach, but some if the episodes were very thought provoking about AI and our interactions with it.

It's pretty wild that was framed as fiction at the time, but pretty much all of it has already become non-fiction.

We are approaching an age where everything you see, especially on a screen, is likely AI-generated. To me, that means community is critical. Otherwise, you'll have a spoon-fed-feel-good understanding of God, and you'll find yourself separated from Him.

2 Timothy 3:1–5 (ESV)

"But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people."

The part that rings true for AI is "having an appearance of godliness, but denying its power." AI will make this easy for all of us.

I agree with you that bringing someone back using AI is all about the person alive vs the person who’s gone. Your warning about changing history is particularly appropriate right now given what’s happening in our ever more warped politics.

Bringing an AI version of someone no matter how well intentioned can’t lead to good or positive outcomes. It’s the high tech version of building Frankenstein.

It’s Ok to look at what people did in life after they are gone but never OK to artificially create something new in their voice or likeness. No thank you!
